Foundation Program

Entry to the Foundation Program requires the successful completion of Year 11 or equivalent. Specific academic entry requirements are listed below. Students with qualifications that are not listed should forward their application and academic results to Deakin College for assessment.

Mature Age

Mature age students (21 years of age and over) may be admitted to a course without meeting the formal academic requirements if they have relevant work experience and other acceptable qualifications.

Portfolio Entry

Students who believe broader assessment of their school results, work experience, community engagement and other training/education achievements would be relevant to their application, may submit a supplementary portfolio to support their application.

Applicants in the following categories should submit a supplementary portfolio.

  • School leavers who have fallen short of the required entry requirements.
  • School leavers who do not have an Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank (ATAR) or equivalent.
  • Students who have not completed Year 12.
Please note: Course specific English language requirements and pre-requisites must still be met.

 

What should you include in your Supplementary Portfolio?

1. Personal Statement

This should be attached to your application and be 250-400 words in length. Your statement should answer the following questions:

  • Why do you wish to pursue the course you have selected? Describe how this course aligns with your interests and career goals. Which ‘major’ do you wish to complete at Deakin University?
  • How will you balance study, work and leisure activities whilst remaining fully committed to your studies?
  • What independent learning skills do you have that will assist you in completing a higher education award. How have you demonstrated those skills in your life and/or career to date?
  • What information technology skills do you have? How familiar are you with word processing, spread sheets , presentations, databases, web browsers and email applications?

 2. Resume

This should include all your work experience to date. It should include details of any paid, unpaid, voluntary, school based, full or part-time work. Which skills did you utilise whilst gaining this work experience.

3. References (optional)

You may wish to submit names and contact details of one or two professional or personal referees to support your application.

English Admission Requirements

The language of instruction at Deakin College is English.

International students must be able to demonstrate English language proficiency before being admitted to a course. The following table can be used as a general guide to English admission requirements.

Entry to the Masters Qualifying Program (Business and Law) requires an IELTS of 6 with no individual band score below 6.

Note: The Australian Government requires students from Student Visa Assessment Level 3 or 4 countries with an IELTS score below 6.0 to study a full-time English course before starting their academic studies at Deakin College. *The Mixed Program is not available at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus or Waterfront Campus or the Media and Communication program at the Melbourne Burwood Campus.

Do not meet the English requirements?

If you do not meet the English language requirements you may be eligible for a Mixed Program or may choose to enrol in an intensive English language course at Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI) to improve your English language proficiency.

Mixed Program

International students whose level of English language proficiency is IELTS 5.0 - with no band score below 4.5 (or equivalent) rather than the required IELTS 5.5, and who satisfy the minimum academic requirements, may be offered entry to the Mixed Program.

The Mixed Program consists of combined English and academic studies . The Mixed Program adds an extra trimester to your Foundation or Diploma course which can be completed in three trimesters (12 months).

Note: The Mixed Program is not available for Foundation and Diploma courses in Commerce, Computing, Engineering and Science programs at the Geelong Campuses or Media and Communication at the Melbourne Burwood Campus. It is also not available for MQP programs.

English Language Course

If students need additional English study they may enrol in the Deakin University English Language Institute (DUELI) to improve their English language proficiency. DUELI offers a wide range of English language courses, from beginners to advanced levels.

DUELI is located on Deakin University's Melbourne Burwood Campus and offers a wide range of programs for students. DUELI also offers a special EAP 1 and EAP 2 pathway program on the Deakin University's Geelong Waterfront Campus.

Deakin College can arrange full-time English tuition at DUELI if students need to improve their English level prior to beginning their academic study at Deakin College. The table below indicates the intakes, dates, and cost of English at DUELI held before each Deakin College trimester.
