When can I return to a Deakin University campus in Australia?

From 15th December 2021, fully vaccinated student visa holders can return to Victoria without needing to apply for a travel exemption.

Who is eligible?

To access this arrangement, travellers must:

  • be fully vaccinated and travel no earlier than seven days after receiving a completed dosage of a vaccine approved or recognised by Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)
    • Children under 12 and those who are medically exempt from COVID-19 vaccination can gain access to the same arrangements as fully vaccinated travellers.
    • Arrangements are also in place to permit unvaccinated minors aged 12-17 years to travel with a fully vaccinated adult. Travellers should check the specific requirements with the state or territory to which they are travelling.
  • hold a valid visa for one of the eligible visa subclasses
  • provide proof of their vaccination status
  • present a negative COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test taken within 3 days of departure (unless a medical exemption applies).
Do I need to apply for a travel exemption?

No. From 15th December 2021 fully vaccinated international students with a valid visa no longer need an exemption to travel to Australia. More information on travel exemptions can be found at the Department of Home Affairs website.

Can International students and their families remain confident that they can stay safe and protected from Covid-19 once they recommence their studies in Australia?

In the uncertainty of these times, Australia’s focus on minimising the risks of COVID-19 means international students can be more confident of their experience here than just about anywhere else in the world.

What if I can’t get a visa or ticket to travel to Australia in time for the start of Trimester 1, 2022?

We will teach both face to face and online in Trimester 1, 2022.  If you are in studying at the Melbourne Burwood campus or the Geelong Waurn Ponds or Waterfront campus, it is expected that you attend face to face classes.


Do I need to be vaccinated?

Yes. Australia requires international arrivals to be fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine. This is to help protect your safety and that of the Australian community. A list of vaccines currently recognised and approved in Australia can be found here.

How do I know if my vaccination certificate meets Australia’s requirements?

Travellers vaccinated outside Australia will be required to present certificates that meet the following criteria:

  • Issued by a national or state/provincial-level authority or an accredited vaccination provider
  • Written in English or accompanied by a certified translation

Must contain:

  • Name as it appears on traveller’s passport
  • Either date of both or passport number
  • The vaccine brand name, and
  • The date of each does or the date the full course of immunisation was completed.

Both paper and digital certificates are acceptable.

What evidence do students need to provide to show they have been fully vaccinated?

International travellers will be required to submit an Australian Travel Declaration online with a copy of your vaccination certificate before your flight. This needs to be completed at least 72 hours before your flight.

You will then need to provide an International COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate (ICVC) or foreign vaccination certificate when you board your flight and again, on arrival in Australia.  Further information can be viewed at the  Smartraveller website.

Which vaccines are recognized by the Australian Government for entry into Australia?

Only students who are fully vaccinated with a vaccine recognised by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) are eligible to enter Australia.

What if my vaccine isn’t recognized by the Australian Government but is recognized by my home country?

Only students who are fully vaccinated with a vaccine recognised by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) are eligible to enter Australia.

Who will check my vaccination status?

Airlines are expected to require passengers on international flights to be fully vaccinated at the time of travel with a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine.

Visa Information

Will I need a current student visa to return to Australia?

You must hold a valid student visa, Student (subclass 500) visa to participate in the International Student Arrival Plan. The Department will not facilitate priority processing for student visas as part of this process. Check the Department’s website for current processing times.

While there is no minimum visa validity required to enter Australia, you should allow enough time on your visa if there are delays to your travel to Australia. You cannot board your scheduled flight without a visa.

How can I check the current status of my student visa?

Students can check their current visa status and the expiry date of their visa through VEVO.  If you would like to check the conditions of your student visa, please check the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) or your ImmiAccount.

What if my visa has expired?

Students can use their ImmiAccount to apply for a new visa if your visa has already expired or is close to expiring.

What if I haven’t received my student visa yet?

If you wish to lodge an application for a student visa in Australia, you must meet standard eligibility requirements. You can apply for a new student visa application via ImmiAccount.


What are the conditions of entry into Australia from overseas?

Do I need a letter from Deakin College to book an airline flight ticket for travelling back Australia?

Students do not require a letter from Deakin College to return to Australia.  Please refer to the conditions of entry question above.

How do I arrange a COVID-19 PCR test prior to departure?

The Australian Government does not maintain a list of approved international facilities or laboratories that provide COVID-19 PCR testing for pre-departure testing purposes.

International travellers to Australia should contact the local health authority of the country that they are in for information on the nearest COVID-19 PCR testing facility or laboratory. This information is generally advertised on the local health authorities’ websites.

Exemptions to pre-departure testing requirements are available for specific individuals and countries. Exemption criteria and supporting documentation are defined in the legislative instruments that sit under the Biosecurity Act. For more information visit the Department of Health website.

Do I need to quarantine to enter Victoria?

No. The Victorian Government has advised that international students returning to study at Victorian institutions will not be required to quarantine on their arrival to Melbourne. A copy of the Victorian Government’s Press Release can be found here.

All International students and Temporary Graduate visa holders arriving in Australia need to comply with the quarantine requirements in the state or territory of their arrival, and any other state or territories to which they plan to travel.

Does Deakin College have a Pre-Departure Handbook that I should read?

Yes.  Please ensure you read a copy of the latest Deakin College Pre-departure handbook prior to arrival.

Will Deakin College pick me up from the airport?

All New and Current students who arrive prior to the commencement of classes for Trimester 1, 2022 will be picked up at the airport for free.  You will be required to complete this form providing your details and accommodation arrangements.  Please note, this free service will only apply to Current returning students for Trimester 1.  After this date, the service will only be offered to New students.

Where will I stay when I first arrive in Melbourne or Geelong?

Be sure to arrange your accommodation as soon as you know which campus you will be studying at. Options will depend on your campus location, budget and your preferred type of accommodation. Accommodation options can be found on our website by clicking here.

What are the requirements for students who are U18?

If you are U18, you will be required to reside in Homestay accommodation.  All other requirements of the Deakin College U18 Management Program will remain the same.  Please visit our website for further information.

Can I stay in university accommodation?

Deakin University Residences are located on the Melbourne Burwood campus and the Geelong Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses.  More information can be found here.

Where should I get tested if I feel unwell when I arrive in Victoria?

If you feel unwell after arriving in Melbourne we advise you to get tested immediately. For a full list of testing sites please click here. Please also note, Covid-19 tests are free in Victoria.

What if I get Covid-19 in Australia, what medical treatment and support am I covered for as an international student?

International students are covered by Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and are required to have health insurance which is a condition of your student visa.

Is it safe to live and study in Victoria?

Yes.  This has been made possible because Australia has now reached a new vaccination milestone –  85% of the adult population is now fully vaccinated against COVID19 – making Australia one of the safest countries on the planet! The State of Victoria is 90% double vaccinated and expected to reach 95% by mid-December 2021.

What do I do if I think I have been at an exposure site?

If you’re concerned you have been at an exposure site, you must visit the Victorian Government exposure site listing and follow the instructions carefully.

If you feel unwell, it is essential you get tested promptly at a COVID-19 testing site and follow the instructions.

I have started my course online, can I finish it online?

Yes, you will be able to complete your studies online if you started your course online.

Can I continue studying online even after I come back to Australia as it is more convenient for me?

As much as we would like you to commence studying on campus, you will have the option to continue studying online as long as you are committed to attending online classes and you have a stable internet connection and access to your Deakin College email account and study materials.

What if I cannot return to Melbourne at all in 2022? Can I still graduate?

Yes, as long as you complete your course online.

I am an international student currently in Victoria, can I now return to my home country and then re-enter Australia in 2022?

Yes (after the 15th of December), as long as you can show proof of a TGA approved vaccination and have a valid student visa to enter Australia.
